Under the direction of Dr. De la Sierra, Music of Spain conducts special programs for schools and universities on the culture, music, and history of Spain. These cultural enrichment programs feature traditional song, guitar, rhythms and dance, and usually culminate in a concert demonstrating these arts.
Topics may also include the language, history, and religions of Spain, emphasizing the multicultural contributions that formed Spanish culture: Gaelic, Arabic, Greek, Christian and Hebrew.
Students are encouraged to participate. In the teaching of the complex rhythms of flamenco, for instance, students will learn the art of palmas (flamenco hand-clapping). Guitarists can elect to have a class on the flamenco guitar. Singers may be taught a few of the traditional songs of Spain. Dancers can learn the elements of flamenco dance. For more information on the history and religious content available, please refer to the web page “Brethren of the Desert.”
“His [Juan De la Sierra’s] concerts, recitals and workshops, replete with emotion, poetry, musical sensitivity and refreshing joy, allow the spectator to enjoy a unique, fascinating, unforgettable experience.”
– Professor Alberto Castilla, Mount Holyoke
Music of Spain has presented these cultural enrichment programs at educational institutions in the United States and abroad, including Ms. Porter’s School (CT), Foxcroft (VA), Mt. Holyoke College (MA), and the Asheville (NC) public schools.
The subjects of concentration and lengths of the presentations in the program can be tailored to suit the needs of the particular institution, and they may range from a few classes to a week-long Artist-in-Residence program. These presentations may be conducted in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese.
